A clean home is built from cadence, not from one heroic Saturday a month. Most rooms need attention on four overlapping timelines — daily touches, weekly resets, monthly maintenance, and quarterly deeps — and the trick is putting each task on the timeline where the work prevents buildup instead of fighting it.
This guide gives the cadence by task, the cadence by room, and how to adjust the schedule for the conditions in your actual house.
The four cadences, by time spent
Daily (10–15 minutes total)
Daily work is "prevent buildup," not "clean." The goal is to never let a small task become a big one.
- Make the beds
- Wipe kitchen counters and the sink after dinner
- Run or unload the dishwasher
- Quick bathroom wipe — sink, faucet, mirror splash
- Clear surface clutter (mail, keys, dishes)
- Sweep or spot-vacuum high-traffic entry zones
If you can only do one daily habit, make it "kitchen reset before bed." It prevents 60% of the next morning's grumpiness.
Weekly (60–120 minutes total)
This is the cadence a standard recurring clean is built around.
- Vacuum all floors, including under furniture you can reach
- Mop hard floors
- Full bathroom clean — toilet, tub/shower, floor
- Dust all horizontal surfaces
- Change bed linens (sheets weekly, pillowcases more if you sleep on your face)
- Clean mirrors and glass
- Empty all trash and recycling
Monthly (2–4 hours total)
Monthly work catches the surfaces weekly cleaning skips.
- Inside the microwave
- Cabinet fronts (especially around handles)
- Interior windows
- Ceiling fan blades and light fixtures
- Vacuum upholstery, flip cushions
- Dust blinds and the tops of door frames
- Wipe down door handles, light switches, remotes
Quarterly (half day)
Quarterly work is what separates a maintained home from one that needs an emergency deep clean every year.
- Inside the oven
- Inside the refrigerator (full empty + wipe)
- Wash curtains, drapes, or wipe blinds
- Clean under and behind movable furniture
- Vacuum mattresses; rotate or flip
- Deep-clean carpets where traffic shows
- Organise one closet or storage area
A deep clean every 4–6 months is a good schedule even with steady weekly upkeep — see the deep cleaning guide for the full task list.
Annual
- Professional carpet cleaning (extraction, not just vacuum)
- Mattress flip or full rotation
- Behind major appliances (fridge coils, washer hoses)
- Wash walls in cooking zones
- Outdoor work — gutters, window exteriors, pressure-wash siding

Adjust the cadence to the house you actually live in
Tighten the schedule if:
- Pets shed or track dirt. Add a daily floor sweep in pet zones and pull vacuum-with-attachments to weekly. The pet-friendly cleaning guide covers what changes.
- Anyone has allergies or asthma. Vacuum 2x/week with a HEPA filter; wash bedding hot weekly; dust monthly tasks become bi-weekly.
- Kids under 6. High-touch sanitising (door handles, light switches, remotes) moves from monthly to weekly.
- Humid or coastal climate. Bathroom deep tasks move up a tier; check grout monthly.
- Cooking happens daily. Stovetop becomes per-use, not per-cooking-session.
Loosen the schedule if:
- Single-occupant or frequent traveller
- Smaller footprint (under 1,000 sq ft)
- Eat out most nights
- No pets, no allergies, no kids
In small or low-occupancy homes, "weekly" can often become "every 10 days" without compromising cleanliness.
A realistic weekly distribution
The "Saturday cleaning day" model burns out fast. Spread the load across the week so no single day costs more than 25–30 minutes.
| Day | Focus | |-----|-------| | Monday | Bathrooms | | Tuesday | Kitchen monthly tasks (rotate one per week) | | Wednesday | Bedrooms — change sheets, dust, vacuum | | Thursday | Living areas — dust, vacuum, electronics | | Friday | Floors — full mop of hard surfaces | | Saturday | Laundry + tidy reset | | Sunday | Off |
Pick the day of the week that fits your real schedule, not the one in the table. The pattern matters more than the alignment.
When professional help makes more sense than DIY
A maintained home with a steady weekly cadence is the goal — but reality is uneven.
- Recurring standard service every 1–2 weeks is the highest-leverage swap: 2 hours of pro work covers what would take you 4+ hours of inconsistent attempts. Pricing in the cost guide.
- Quarterly deep clean between recurring service handles the monthly+quarterly task list in one pass.
- One-time deep clean to reset a backlogged home — most homes go from "overwhelming" to "easy to maintain" with one reset clean.
- Move-in / move-out is its own category — separate cadence, see the move-in/out guide.
Start small, build the system
A schedule you can hold for three months beats a perfect one you abandon after two weeks. Start with the daily 15-minute routine and one focused weekly slot — that alone keeps most homes in good shape.
When you are ready to offload it, book a cleaning and a vetted Sweeppa pro takes over the weekly work. Browse service areas, check the FAQ, or read about how it works.
